Caffeine in Specialty Coffee: How Much Is Really There and What Influences It

It is often thought that espresso is a "caffeine bomb" and that long filter coffee has almost no effect: in reality, it is the opposite. Caffeine is highly water-soluble, so the longer the contact time between water and ground coffee, the greater the total amount extracted.

An espresso extracted in about 25 seconds typically contains 60-80 mg of caffeine in a small volume. A filter coffee (V60 or Batch Brew) extracted in 3 minutes, with more grounds, can reach a total of 150-250 mg. For a gentler energy boost, our Specialty 100% Arabica coffees structurally contain less caffeine compared to blends based on industrial Robusta.
